ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jamie Gray is a mixed media artist living and working in Denver, CO. Her current practice melds abstraction and post-minimalism with flat sculptural forms, nature-inspired motifs, and a dedication to hand-crafted processes (such as woodworking, gilding, encaustic and marbling). Gray holds a bachelor's and master's degree in design; this foundation deeply underpins her aesthetic choices and creative processes.
"High Desert Homecoming" at Bell Projects gallery marks Gray's first solo exhibition in Denver. Recent juried group shows include Big Draw Colorado at Arvada Center for the Arts, the 40th Annual All Colorado Show at Curtis Center for the Arts, and Beyond 2d at Spark Gallery. Previously Gray exhibited in galleries & art festivals across the US & UK; including a solo show at P.E.O. Foundation Art Gallery in Missouri. She's had work commissioned for museum shops in London & Kansas City and hotel collections in NYC & Miami; and sold to collectors in Australia, Dubai, England, Germany, and the US.
"It is said that all life on earth is created from the matter of long-dead stars. Through my art, I'm interested in making contemplative moments for interior spaces that reference some of the creative forces behind our natural world. Growing up at the base of the Rocky Mountains has influenced my art practice. The shapes I see in my environment — from pebbles to prairies, feathers to forests, mushrooms to mountains — provide me with a constant source of inspiration. I’m interested in creating a visual language, rooted in mark-making and organic abstraction, that reveals a common visual thread across these natural forms." – Jamie
“Jamie creates paintings that are both geometric and primordial” – Art Curator, Aurora Garrison
“Jamie has created a visual vocabulary that speaks to us of a dreamy other world. Friendly shapes suggestive of natural forms greet you...I want one on my wall to stare at while daydreaming.” – Gallerist, Vanessa Lacy
In 2015 whilst living in the UK, Gray created a line of art jewelry that was sold at some of London’s finest curated craft markets and independent high street boutiques. Jamie was commissioned to create a bespoke jewelry collection for both the Royal Academy of Arts museum shop in London and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art museum shop in Kansas City.
